Catch the Flies Your Neighbors Are Sending!

Flies are more than just an annoyance—they can stress your animals, spread disease, and disrupt daily life. While Fly Predators help control fly populations before they hatch, fly traps are essential for catching adult flies that sneak in from neighboring properties or those that escaped early control efforts.

But here’s the catch: Not all fly traps work the same way. You need to:

Most horse owners find they need at least three different types of traps for complete fly control. Let’s break it down.

Best Fly Traps for House Flies (Non-Biting Flies)

House flies are the pesky, buzzing flies that gather around manure, garbage, and leftover feed. They don’t bite, but they spread bacteria, making them a serious nuisance in barns and homes.

1. Odor Traps – Attract & Capture House Flies

These traps use a powerful scent to lure house flies into a container where they can’t escape. However, NEVER place these inside your barn—they attract more flies! Instead, place them at least 50 feet away from animal areas to draw flies away.

Best Odor Traps for House Flies:

2. Sticky Traps – Ideal for Indoor Barn Use

Since odor traps attract flies, you shouldn’t place them inside your barn. Instead, use sticky traps to catch flies that are already inside. These traps are non-toxic, easy to use, and effective against multiple flying pests.

Best Sticky Trap for House Flies:
  • EZ Trap® – Large surface area, reusable with a quick rinse. 2-pack for $12.49

Placement Tip: Hang sticky traps away from fans and air currents to ensure maximum catch rates.

Best Fly Trap for Biting Stable Flies

Stable flies are the real menace—they bite your horse’s legs, causing constant stomping, twitching, and stress. Fly Predators don’t stop stable flies because they develop in different conditions. The best way to control them is with a specialized biting stable fly trap.

Top Pick for Biting Stable Flies:

Where to Place It: Near leg-level areas where stable flies bite the most—along fence lines, near paddocks, or outside stall areas.

Horse & Deer Fly Traps (Tabanidae Flies)

These big, aggressive flies have painful bites that make horses bolt, twitch, and even injure themselves trying to escape. Since they breed in water, Fly Predators won’t stop them—you need a specialty trap.

The Most Effective Horse & Deer Fly Trap
  • H-Trap – Proven to catch 4X more Tabanid flies than other traps! ($369.99)

How It Works:

Place the H-Trap in a sunny area between the source of Tabanid Flies, typically ponds and streams and your animals (and beyond your animals’ reach). Horse and Deer Flies are attracted to the dark ball, thinking it is an animal and blood meal. When the flies hit the ball, they fly up and get trapped in the collection cup at the top. Note this trap only gets Tabanids. One H-Trap will cover a 5 horse outdoor paddock of about 2.5 acres. This trap is sturdy, chemical free and with its one leg, is easy to set up and move. It’s UV resistant, wind stable with a gyroscopic upper bracket and anti-rotation ground anchor. Assembly is not difficult and it has a two year warranty. It will last for years if brought in during winter and high wind storms.
